Hello and happy May! It is officially market season for Motor City Soap Company and I’ve listed my upcoming¬†events below. I’m looking forward to returning to Eastern Market’s growing Sunday Street Market and the lovely Corktown Farmers’ Market next to Detroit Institute of Bagels. This weekend I’m at the Designers’ Show House MarketPlace, which is an annual fundraiser for the Junior League of Detroit. And it’s a perfect place to find¬†your last minute Mother’s Day gifts! I’m also traveling to Cleveland and Grand Rapids and look forward to meeting new vendors and customers.

If you are local and would like to stop by my studio to pick up a customer order, please feel free to contact me. And future soapmakers can find my summer class series here.

Wash on,

Caitlyn

Spring Banner Large
I’m celebrating the beginning of spring by spending¬†time outdoors on my bike, removing plastic from¬†windows at the soap studio (ahhhh) and planning spring crops with fellow growers for our community garden.

In addition, here are several spring-inspired updates from Motor City Soap Company:

Slowing into a new year

1 Feb

I’ve had quite the break from reality and regiment this holiday season – first, a lovely week at the end of December in Wisconsin and then an incredible trip to Thailand right after ringing in the new year here in Detroit. ¬†Now it’s back to it (“it” being all sorts of business and pleasure quickly filling up my calendar). There’s a desire to do more and to do things better. But maybe the best thing to do is to slow down and do¬†less. Finding myself in the depths of winter, I realize that this may be the perfect time to do just that. This is the natural time to reflect and regroup. While I look forward to the first signs of spring and all that comes with the changing of seasons, it’s also reassuring to have nature’s permission (more like a mandate in Michigan) to finally relax.

Upon reflection, 2012 was a good year. A really good year. A small part of that goodness included founding Motor City Soap Company in August. I was so grateful for the supportive environment I stumbled upon as I began navigating my way around “small business land.” Special thanks are in order to my very first customers – my family and close friends who were ready to buy my soaps before they were even out of the molds! Now with one busy gift-giving season behind me, I have a better idea of where I’d like to go this year. These next few months will include building up new inventory with some of my best-selling bars as well as trying out a few new ones like The Traveler and The Cyclist. I’d also like to see my product in a few stores around the city. But like I said – I’m trying to slow down and do less. Perhaps making a few batches of soap is enough for now.

Moving forward, I am actively seeking ways to slow down and truly enjoy the work I do. Thank you for joining me in this new year.
