Motor City Soap Company Approved for Kiva Zip Fundraising

21 Dec

Last month Motor City Soap Company applied to Kiva Zip as a potential borrower through their micro lending program. I am excited to announce that as of yesterday evening, the application was approved, and my business is now accepting person-to-person loans!

The purpose of this loan is to purchase enough carrier oils (olive, sunflower, coconut and palm) and essential oils to increase my soapmaking production in 2014. I currently produce between two and three batches per month and I plan to double production next year to meet the increasing demand for my soaps. My customer base (customers like you!) grows weekly and I am beginning to seek retail outlets with wholesale opportunities so I will need to build an inventory to sustain these sales.

Small Business Saturday

30 Nov

Small Business Saturday logoMost people have heard of Black Friday but what about Small Business Saturday? While this official day is only a few years old, it already has a powerful following. Small Business Saturday was founded in 2010 by American Express to support small businesses across the country. This day falls on the Saturday after Black Friday (today!) and promotes shopping “small” to support the local stores that add to the fabric of tight-knit communities. In 2011 the U.S. Senate officially recognized Small Business Saturday and millions of shoppers participated in the movement. And by 2012, one study estimated that consumer spending on Small Business Saturday reached $5.5 billion!

Look for the above logo at participating stores this holiday season. Maybe even try to trace your dollar as you spend your earnings at various shops. Is this money going into the pockets of people in your own community? How is your dollar impacting the lives of people you interact with on a daily, weekly or monthly basis?

Slowing into a new year

1 Feb

I’ve had quite the break from reality and regiment this holiday season – first, a lovely week at the end of December in Wisconsin and then an incredible trip to Thailand right after ringing in the new year here in Detroit.  Now it’s back to it (“it” being all sorts of business and pleasure quickly filling up my calendar). There’s a desire to do more and to do things better. But maybe the best thing to do is to slow down and do less. Finding myself in the depths of winter, I realize that this may be the perfect time to do just that. This is the natural time to reflect and regroup. While I look forward to the first signs of spring and all that comes with the changing of seasons, it’s also reassuring to have nature’s permission (more like a mandate in Michigan) to finally relax.

Upon reflection, 2012 was a good year. A really good year. A small part of that goodness included founding Motor City Soap Company in August. I was so grateful for the supportive environment I stumbled upon as I began navigating my way around “small business land.” Special thanks are in order to my very first customers – my family and close friends who were ready to buy my soaps before they were even out of the molds! Now with one busy gift-giving season behind me, I have a better idea of where I’d like to go this year. These next few months will include building up new inventory with some of my best-selling bars as well as trying out a few new ones like The Traveler and The Cyclist. I’d also like to see my product in a few stores around the city. But like I said – I’m trying to slow down and do less. Perhaps making a few batches of soap is enough for now.

Moving forward, I am actively seeking ways to slow down and truly enjoy the work I do. Thank you for joining me in this new year.
